A few days ago I said that freedom isn't free. So, now I pose this question
to those I've watched post over lawn signs, GLBT candidates, Green
representation, and other matters of great importance, what will be your
debt to those who will go off and fight this war WHEN it commences.

Let me describe them to you. They will be disproportionately Black,
Hispanic and poor. The second person I ever met from Minneapolis was an
African American. We were stationed in Germany together.

I don't necessarily want to detract from your important message, but feel I have
to point out that GLBT still aren't officially allowed to participate. Despite
a few token changes in military policy over the past few years, we are still
unwelcome to participate in the defense of the country, I'm glad, though, that
the military did not forego the opportunity to benefit from your intelligence.

Louis King continues:

To think that these people will come home to racial profiling, the latest
buzz word for racism; to think that they won't be able to find an affordable
place to live and the communities surrounding Minneapolis feel no obligation
to build housing that might house "those people";

David Piehl writes:

All of the social ills noted by Louis are symptoms of a divided society. Given
that the recent events were an attack on every one of us as individual members
of the same "group", perhaps we will get better at remembering that we are one
city, one society, one nation. Each of us represent very different components
of an important recipe. Not a melting pot, more of a chef's salad. As we
remember how important we all are to each other, issues will/should be more
readily addressed in a fair manner - not unlike the irrevocable and overdue
advances women made in the last century during that major threat to the "free
world". It's definately a time of reflection, and a time where we need to
consider the direct impact of the larger issues on Minneapolis and how we
cooperate and appreciate each other. Further, it is important to recognize that
the opportunists who exist among us all will continue their opportunistic
behavior in the days ahead; we cannot let a few opportunists who thrive on
divisive politics divide the public any more.
