I have no interest in baseball but have become (along with so many other
"self righteous" people on this list) an unwitting expert in the ways of
millionaire manipulations and all of the interesting factoids that have
emerged over the five years of this ridiculous struggle. The argument that
the twins are a community asset have nothing to do with the terms of their
contract with the metrodome. Unlike most contracts, which have provisions for
money damages in the event of a breach by one of the parties, the metrodome
apparently has a provision for specific performance by the twins until the
end of next years season.
This raises some interesting problems: if the twins are forced to play as a
"lame duck" team for one season, who will they play? Further, if MLB is
serious about this contraction business, they will eliminate the Montreal
team leaving the league with an odd number of teams. This, I have heard, will
cause all sorts of strange scheduling problems.
In other words, this actions by MLB resembles Bush's foray into Afghanistan:
they look like they know what they are doing but all sorts of snags and
contradictions lurk around the corner. Of course, they could just be trying
to manipulate us into building a stadium for them.
