While I think the Strib's arguments haven't been nearly as eloquent as yours,
Craig, I gotta say that the larger point--indicating why it's ludicrous to
sacrifice the twins, to no real end at all other than maybe to satisfy all
the bleeding hearts on this list--has been refreshing. Yesterday's editorial
made some excellent and salient points. If the Twins are singled out for
contraction, it's valid to ask why, and they've done that pretty well, in
spite of their clear conflicts of interest. (As you know, Sports is not
strictly speaking news, but entertainment. Which explains why real newspapers
like the Times tend to bury it somewhere near the Manhattan Real Estate
listings. Then again, in a paper like the Strib, the Sports section is often
the only draw in this inreasingly illiterate society, but that's another rant
altogether. Lose 60 percent of your annual professional sporting events to
cover, and you've gotta start cashing out a few columnists and reporters.)

With the Boston Red Sox going up for sale to the tune of half a billion
dollars, you really gotta wonder what the hell is going on here. And if you
think Fenway is the Elysian Field of baseball, you haven;t checked out the
Boston Globe lately. They've been trying to build a new one there for
decades... but in their case history (and a passion for it) stands in the
way, not a self-righteous community.
