Sonja Dahl told a nice story about a police car stopping at a pedestrian
crosswalk on Nokomis Parkway.

But what is a pedestrian (or motorist) to do on a busy three-lane, one-way
street like University Avenue SE?

There you see lots of implied crosswalks with pedestrians waiting at them
throughout the day. The 30 mph-plus stream of traffic won't stop, not across
three lanes certainly. Drivers who would honor the state law do so at the
risk of their rear bumpers, and aren't likely to be able to persuade drivers
in other lanes to halt in unison.

This is one area where St. Paul seems to be ahead of Minneapolis, though at
the cost of polluting the visual environment with fluorescent green/yellow
signs.
