Eeeek! I apologize for this post. Somehow a portion of the post simply vanished between when I e-mailed it and when it arrived on the list.
The portion that is missing from below is that: It is important to note that last summer all of the women on the Lavender staff walked out in a mass action because of Steven's sexist behavior. Steven attempted to physically intimdate Lavender editor Rudy Renauld on several occasions. Steven also paid women less than he paid the men on staff. You know...classic sexist bullshit. Lavender should be a case study in every women's studies class in the country. Last summer's walk out was actually the second walk out at Lavender of which I am aware. I was part of a Lavender walk out in 1998 after then editor Jennifer Finell was fired (Jennifer was fired because she believed in creating intentional space in Lavender for youth, queer people of color, transgender folks, and women). Many of Lavender's writers left with Jennifer. And the creation of the now defunct Siren was somewhat in response to that walk-out. Lavender has a HORRIBLE record with the greater GLBT community. Steven Rocheford threw a hissy fit when the TC Pride Board, rightfully, did not ask Lavender to put together the Pride Guide last year. Lavender's costs came in way above all the other bids collected by the Pride Board. Lavender's response was to create its own "official" pride guide and to pull some TC Pride Bashing (much like the Dibble/Stonewall DFL bashing taking place now). -Brandon Lacy Campos -Powderhorn Park -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, June 08, 2002 8:42 PM To: Eva Young; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Mpls] Curiouser and Curiouser First of all I think it is necessary to talk about the particular history of Stonewall DFL and Lavender. It is important to understand that Lavender (ie Steven Rocheford) is lashing out at both Scott Dibble and Stonewall DFL because both Scott and Stonewall supported the effort of Lavender employees to unionize. Steven Rocheford and Lavender had charges brought against them at the National Labor Rights Board because of Steven's union busting practices (100% of the Lavender staff voted to unionize and Steven did whatever he could to break the union). Further, it is important to note that last summer all of the Tim Petlock was the acting Stonewall DFL Chair for a brief period. No member of the Stonewall DFL Board engaged in any sort of campaign to silence anyone with regards to the Catherine Shreeves campaign (of whom I know). Stonewall DFL has a response to the editorial in Lavender. But please do not take my word for any of this as I am speaking in my capacity as a community member and not for the Stonewall DFL. It is also naive to suggest that GLBT issues are a non-issue in the DFL. I, as a member of the Stonewall DFL, do not believe that GLBT issues are a non-issue in the DFL, nor do I believe that other Stonewall members believe that GLBT issues are non-issues in the party. Quite to the contrary, we have some pretty homophobic out-state members of the DFL. -Brandon Lacy Campos -Powderhorn Park _______________________________________ Minneapolis Issues Forum - A Civil City Civic Discussion - Mn E-Democracy Post messages to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest option, and more: http://e-democracy.org/mpls _______________________________________ Minneapolis Issues Forum - A Civil City Civic Discussion - Mn E-Democracy Post messages to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest option, and more: http://e-democracy.org/mpls
