http://citypages.com/databank/23/1122/article10445.asp The article basically says that because Lavender doesn't cover the labor troubles within its business, it doesn't do good political reporting. Other news sources -- City Pages, the Star Tribune and the Women's Press have all covered this. from the article: He is convinced that the magazine's disappointment with Dibble is rooted in the legislator's support for workers at Lavender who voted to unionize last year. Dibble appeared at a pro-union rally and spoke in favor of the employees' right to organize. "The only thing that's a common denominator here between Scott Dibble and Lavender is that he spoke out in support of Lavender employees being able to organize," Hooker says. "And that is one thing that sends Steven Rocheford into a mouth-spitting frenzy." Dibble concurs with this assessment: "My guess is that this was a decision on the part of the owner and publisher," he says. "A reaction to my support for those Lavender employees that were trying to form a union." EY: That could be. Still, the story of harrassing emails from Stonewall people going to women who supported Shreves is a concern to me. If they had no >problem with me attacking the hypocrisy of her political hero, Tim Pawlenty, >on the state domestic partner issue, then Lavender shouldn't have feared >printing my final column for them exposing their own political shenanigans. Tim Pawlenty is not my political hero for the record. I've been publically critical of him on various forums regarding his stand on the Domestic Partnership issue and about the rediculous statement he made to Politics in Minnesota. I did tell Alan that I had trouble with the article because he didn't also cover Brian Sullivan's position on these issues. Sullivan certainly needs to be scrutinized. His support has been mainly from the theocrat wing of the GOP. >As for trying to make an issue out of who was chair of Stonewall DFL when >and for how long, puh-lease! I recall discussing the Dibble Shreves race -- and that Lavender had altered Hooker's coverage of that race. I don't recall discussing who was chair of Stonewall DFL. >Megan Thomas had stepped down for personal reasons, but >has now returned. Petlock voluntarily turned the gavel back over to Thomas >-- no fuss, no muss. Doesn't sound like any infighting or major sinister >scandals afoot, does it? I wasn't saying there was -- I was just confused by the whole thing since Lavender had published a letter with Tim Petlock signing as Chair of Stonewall, Megan Thomas had signed a post here as Chair of Stonewall, and then looking at the Stonewall website yesterday, Megan was listed as director, not chair. Things are all explained now. >I agree with Eva that the Minneapolis area GLBT press lags far behind other >metropolitan GLBT publications in the arena of political reporting. I would like to encourage Alan to publish his column that Lavender declined to publish here on Minneapolis Issues. In fairness, Lavender also declined to publish a letter to the editor by yours truly regarding Alan's column about Urban Ventures. That being said, Lavender now wants to get several writers from different political perspectives to write the Gay Agenda column. I was asked to be one of those writers. I've taken them up on the offer. When I write those columns, I will be strictly speaking for myself.
