I drove down Hiawatha highway yesterday, from 46th St to the West Bank exit. I looked hard for the reasons to keep Hiawatha at 35 mph, but I didn't see any. There are no residences anywhere near the road. Can anyone tell me why the speed limit isn't 55 mph throughout that whole stretch of highway, besides the promise of a misguided politician a number of years ago? If anywhere should be a highway, it's that road.
The issue of the speed limit on Hiawatha is not just about today. Yes, it is hard to understand why in light of the present state of development on the road that the speed limit isn't set higher. But one really needs to look to the future and what kind of development one would like to see along the street. If the speed limit is raised it will be a permanent impediment to pedestrian friendly development.

The road right now is a huge moat between neighborhoods to the east and west of it. It literally divides the city at that point. The only hope for changing that is new development along the road - development that includes housing and pedestrian friendly elements.
