Excellent points made by all posters about the potential wading pool cuts. I can't imagine a cost cutting action taken by the park board I would oppose more strongly (short of the park board deciding to tear up playground equipment and sell it to the highest bidder for cash). Wading pools are physical structures that are already built and just need a minimal investment to operate each summer. The $50K saved seems insignificant compared to the community value lost by not filling the pools. The pools are an amenity for the public that help define neighborhoods, build relationships and offer recreational value for general park users and summer programs held at the parks. They are the envy of all the suburban families that I know - a simple summer pleasure within walking distance for most Minneapolis residents. I just can't believe there's not a $50,000 savings with a less public face.
My question to the park board would be whether they are treating the cuts they need to make as permanent or simply temporary fixes until better economic times. It seems to me the reduction in LGA will have a permanent effect on the park board budget. Are they suggesting we permanently discontinue these wading pools or are they expecting new money next year that will allow them to be filled? Michelle Martin Armatage TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1.
