I've been called a WB so many times it doesn't even bother me any more... except for the time when a bunch of gangbangers yelled "bang the white bitch" as I jogged past and they took chase after me. Sad to hear that you're being forced to join the growing ranks of Minneapolitans in exile from our crime ridden city. With the Postal Service wasting a lot of energy trying to get rid of disabled workers such as myself I may be free of the need for a place to sleep 4 nights a week close to Minneapolis soon. Though 53 is a bit early to be forced into retirement, the only real hassle may be finding affordable health insurance. Even with property values crashing here (the 3 houses for sale on my block still sit empty, asking price $130,000 a piece) I should still be able to get enough out of this dump to buy a decent home in rural Minnesota. Greater Minnesota has some great opportunities for artists, which lots of big spaces available at giveaway prices, cheap housing too. I ran into an old friend from the cities yesterday who now manages a performing arts venue in a small town by the Canadian border. She rents a 3 bedroom house with a double garage, and has the option of buying it for $40,000!
On a couple other subjects:
Cabbie safety: the real subsidy is being given by the drivers- they're laying their lives on the line so businessmen can have cheap transport to the airport and such. Look at the rates posted on the cabs- could you earn a living wage for those numbers, never mind run a car, pay the exorbitant rates for commercial vehicle insurance, etc.? And keep in mind that a lot of big businesses are getting deep discounts off those rates.
MPD's new radios boondoggle: I'm aware that the crosspatch with MINSEF, etc.. is supposed to still be functional. However, from what I hear it's not being used. Perhaps MPD is not using it in hopes of maintaining secrecy? I also noted that our latest homicide which occurred at 3 am was not reported until late in Channel 4's 10am news- are the media having trouble monitoring MPD's new radio system also? Given that the new system has no functional advantages over the old, and scanner owners should not even be a minor concern to MPD, is the real purpose of the new system to keep the media from seeing beyond MPD's PR flack?
