Arrgh - i was just going to post a PS to say that you can always see the full path for the task in the top right hand corner (above the Properties panel) and I noticed an 'Up' button which does almost exactly what I want (jumps you to the parent) except a) it switches you back to the Outline view if you are in the To Do view b) there isn't a Hotkey option for it
