Home PC, yes. National average of all pc's in use, no. :-)  There are
a lot of embarrassingly old pieces of kit about - including 286's.
There seems to be a sufficiently sizeable market for low spec hardware
that several companies make upgrade kits and bolt on parts for 486DX
machines.

Anyway, the original point of my statement, 'way back at the start of
the thread, was not the absolute speed of the hardware, but the
relative speed of newer programs running on it.  Your assertion that
new games require a P-II as a minimum simply supports my original
point - the increase in hardware performance required for modern
software is disproportionate to the increase in the features of the
software.  Most of the improvement in games, IMO, is taken up in the
improved 3d hardware, the computing power has pretty much gone to
waste..
