So I bought Netconnect 3. Thought it would be a neat Christmas present
for myself. 12 neat Internet programs all in one neat bundle. Ain't that
cool?
4 of them actually work, too.
1) Voyager. Click on the icon, and the machine instantly hangs and
crashes.
2) Microdot-II. Downloads email fine from my mail server. Click on the
folder to go to reading the mails, and the machine instantly hangs and
crashes.
3) WebVision. Click on the icon, and the screen instantly scrambles and
the machine crashes.
4) Genesis. Can't even get online. Click on 'Connect' and it gives an
'err' message saying that it can't get ariadne offline. Which is
interesting since I'm trying to get it *online*, not offline.
5) AmChat. Looks like some kind of an unofficial ICQ program for the
Amiga? Only I think I need some way to register an UIN before I can use
the program. The program, of course, can't do it itself, and therefore
can't be used.
6) Manager. *BEEP* The icon(s) have no default tool. And by this point
I'm starting to be annoyed enough that I don't even bother to use
IconEdit to switch the icon to a tool icon.
7) mFTP. Seems nice enough, only if I actually try to connect to my Unix
server, it connects, and then instantly reverts back to the start
screen. I try doubleclicking the server again. It connects, and reverts
back to the start again. And again. And again. Ad nauseum. It'd be nice
if the program actually told me why it wasn't connecting so I could try
to fix it. God I miss AmFTP.
8) Documentation. Of course, it's only in HTML format. And Voyager is
nice enough to crash instantly if I dare doubleclick its icon. How nice.
On the other hand, AmTelnet, AmIRC, NetInfo and MetalWeb actually
started up and ran without any problems. So far, anyway. Considering I
don't really use the latter two, I've got a whopping price of $50/item
for my new toys AmTelnet and AmIRC.
Anyone wanna help me lower the per item price, and try to figure out how
to get all those nifty programs running? I've got OS 3.0, Blizzard 1260,
and MUI 3.8.
