  I've had some experience in the area. It's best to use a HD on the
same plane it was formatted on (high level format). If you change the
position of the HD, the best thing to do is to back it up--then
re-format it in the new position. This will help prevent problems in
the future, but it should still work anyway. Keep in mind, some drives
are more particular than others. You may not ever have
a problem; but to play it safe, I copy all the files off of the drive,
reformat it, then copy it back. 

Of coarse, you aren't supposed to smoke around computers either!
