Although most of the hard drives I've used have been horizontal, I can
confirm vertically mounted drives don't seem to be much of a problem.
A friend of mine used to have his RiscPC on its side, no errors.
However, I can definitely say that running a hard disk at a dodgy
angle over a period of time does cause problems :-) Don't ask why, but
I set up a spare 3.5" 1 GB drive on one of the work machines, mounted
at a weird angle in a 5.25" bay... the drive failed spectacularly
about a week later. It reformatted fine, and is still going strong (in
a nice, stable, horizontal 3.5" adaptor) - but be wary is my advice.
