I thought that 3G was supposed to use PPP, which would (at least at
this time) argue for making a serial driver for this device.  But I
guess sufficient "intelligence" in the device could make it look like
anything.

For what it's worth, we've discussed transitioning the sppp driver
over to GLDv3.  It's something we'd like to see happen over time
... it's just a matter of priorities and effort.
