Me neither, but I don't see a better way at this point.

A straight forward idea would be to allow layer3 interfaces (something like 
DL_NONE) in GLDv3. I don't want to judge on whether implementing such a GLD 
device type would be worth it, but IMHO this would be the cleanest solution to 
avoid artificial (un)framing for devices or drivers which only implement ipv4/6.
