Yes, I think that's the best solution, and something like that is
eventually coming in GLDv3.

For now, if I were dealing with an interface like this, I'd be pretty
well tempted to stick with plain old DLPIv2 and STREAMS -- not even
GLD.  It's not all _that_ hard to code to, and writing it that way
means that it'll work on pretty much any version of Solaris ever
released.

Of course, it does mean that once GLDv3 is finally ready, and you want
to port over, you'll have a small pile of code to discard.
