I dislike MS too, but not because of the icons, or the *windows* concept. Maybe I just didn't stay with XFCE long enough to really get used to it, and appreciate it's finer points? I tried Blackbox/Fluxbox for a bit also and found it lacking for me. I found Gnome to be less configurable, or less easily configurable at least.
