Have to agree with you about icons, but I am an outsider in all this
anyway.  I hate floating icons, loathe file managers, and dislike
menus.  GNOME suits my needs perfectly.  It looks crisp and clean and
uncluttered.  All heavily used applications can be accessed by icon on
the panel.  Six workspaces with several xterms permanently available
for command line stuff.  Who needs anything more?  (Ducks quickly)

It is like everybody keeps saying.  In Linux you have the choice.
Everybody is different.

Maybe straying off topic a bit; how is it that Windows users don't
complain about the lack of multiple workspaces?  That is the one
feature of UNIX/Linux that I could not live without?  Been using this
feature of X right back 14 years.
