Thanks for your help, Margot. I have been on the screenshots pages, and you are right! There are no desktop icons. But, on the 'Show us your desktop' part of the Xfce forum, some desktops have them and some don't. Thanks also for the very useful tip about the .cache file. I have made a note of it for future use. If I try to remember it, I won't! In fact, I have printed out the messages from you, Charles and Joe, as they contain such useful information.
