Uhhh! I hope not. I'm not very good at hardware issues.
On the other hand: I *never* encountered that problem before with a
RedHat 6.2 installation. (Same maschine, same hardware. XFree
3.something).
If it is a hardware problem: does Xfree 4.1 demand more from my
hardware than Xfree 3.x? So that certain problem only come to light
with 4.1? If so: is it possible to turn that of?
Sorry, if this question is silly. As I stated before, I'm not very
good at hardware issues.

No, for example compiling KDE 2.1 on several ttys overnight is no
problem.

Sorry, there's no reset-button at my laptop.
Perhaps I try to induce the crash again and then try to reset my
computer by holding the power button for six seconds as the other
poster suggested.

Uh, when *I* do that, it is like shooting in the dark. I would prefer
a workaround. (Since I use X only occasionally a performance loss
would be o.k.)

Sorry, I have no second card. I would not mind changing a video-card
on a desktop-computer (myself beeing a hardware-dummie or not), but on
my laptop ... I'm not brave enough to open it.
You don't think there could be a conflict between X and the
kernel-VESA?
[...]
Thanks for your advice.
