Aah, thank you, that explains why I was not able to set Xvfb to work
... :-)

Yes, I think, I will use fbdev. Since it is not already in my
/usr/X11-tree, I will have to recompile X, right?
Do you think that conflict between Kernel VESA-FB and X worth a bug
report?
(BTW: evidences acumulate. As stated before I have deactivated the
kernel fb for testing purposes. Now I'm working on X for several hours,
while running two instances of X on different ttys, changing to and fro
between them and the text console very often. To put even the
processor under stress I have a compile running all the time. Well,
the processor cooler runs all the time, but no crashes.)
