O.k. I understand for now that the following points are possible
causes:

1. There is a problem with my video-card (come to think about it:
since I have a laptop it could very well be built in on the
   motherboard ...?)

2. There is a conflict between the framebuffer device used by the
Linux kernel (activated at boot time) and the way X handles access
to the video card (= S3 Virge MX+).

Both may apply: there is a conflict which only leads to a crash
because of a flaw with my video-card and the other way around: there
is a flaw in my videocard which only leads to crashes when I use both:
Kernel Fb and X. (I hope this is not a silly assumption. again: I am a
dummie in those things.)

If two or one and two apply then I have two possible workarounds:

1. I deactivate the Kernel - fb. This is what I am trying now for
testing purposes. I had no crashes yet and this seems to be an
indication the the kernel fb has something to do with it. But maybe
the next crash will come anyway.

However, if it works or not: in the long run this is not a
solution for me. I prefer to work on a textconsole and I need
        the kernel fb.

2. There is this X-Server for the Linux framebuffer device, isn't it?
I think Xvfb is it's name in XFree 4.1. If both, text console *and*
X use the kernel fb then there should be no conflict. Is this
assumption correct? However, with XFree 3.* the fb-device-server
   was pretty slow ...

I think I have to play with my bios settings as suggested. I hope
this will lead to something.
