Ok, yes there is an X server that uses fbdev, but it's not Xvfb (this uses a
*virtual* framebuffer, which provides absolutely no output... It's pretty
much a dummy server). The fbdev driver is what you're looking for. And yes,
it is slow, but since you said you rarely use X, it's probably not a big
deal.
