I am a newby myself.. so I dont know if this is correct... if you're using
runlevel 5 where the kdm X login manager handles the login, then u can
change the login manager by editting the /etc/inittab file. In that file,
there is a section that looks like this -->

X:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

(in your case, it would not be prefdm but the login manager for kdm.... u
have to change that to gdm)

I hopw someone else can add to my comment.. you'd be safer getting a second
opinion.
