I just went to ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.1.0/binaries/
and grabbed the files for my platform as per the instructions
there and then installed 4.1.0.

I then ran xf86cfg which generated a perfect XF86Config file
except that it only had "640x480" modes in it.  I just changed
the following line in the ""Display" subsections of the Screen"
section from

                Modes   "640x480"

to

                Modes   "1024x768"

and it just worked (so long as I didn't try for more than 8-bit
colour).  In fact, I deleted all the other depth "Display"
items.
