could  be that video card isn't supported under X 4.1 yet. (it's an older
board, so updating the driver wasn't a high priority, probably).

you could try building a kernel with framebuffer support, and using the
X 4.1 'fbdev' (or under X 3.3.6 XF86_FBDev) server. that ought to work.
