I don't know what config files it uses and I haven't got man pages installed for it, but if you do a [art]$ man kdm and look for the FILES section towards the bottom it should show you where the config files are. It would also be worth reading the page itself. (I don't use kdm so I can't really help there). But with regard to xdm perhaps we can sort it out. I note that you say that you can login with a text-console (runlevel 3) and then use startx and everything works nicely. (Have I mis-understood anything there?). There should be errors from the xdm in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-errors could you post a copy of them?
