I'm still hooked on the "authentication" problem as a possibility.  I 
unfortunately don't use SuSE, but I'm guessing that it uses pam for 
authorization.  Do you have a file called /etc/pam.d/xdm?  If so then 
please post its contents.  (I should really make a list of things that we 
should look at instead of doing them one-by-one like this!).
