Just tried the man kdm. No manual entry for kdm comes up.

Yes, you are correct, I can login run level 3 and startx with no problem.
Here is the xdm-errors file. It is actually located located in /etc/X11/xdm
with a link in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/ which I don't understand, but think
the upgrade to 4.2 did that. The file is from Sunday, I guess when I tried
the XDM login.

Will look at the man pages for KDM.

What about kdm? I don't know what config files it uses and I haven't got
man pages installed for it, but if you do a
[art]$ man kdm
and look for the FILES section towards the bottom it should show you where
the config files are. It would also be worth reading the page itself. (I
don't use kdm so I can't really help there).
But with regard to xdm perhaps we can sort it out. I note that you say
that you can login with a text-console (runlevel 3) and then use startx
and everything works nicely. (Have I mis-understood anything there?).
There should be errors from the xdm in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-errors
could you post a copy of them?
