(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.fremlin/programs/linux/read-edid/). It creates the monitor description by reading information from the monitor. Caveat: I haven't tried it personally, but I bookmarked it in case I needed it one day.

You are correct in that you need to use a custom monitor setup but you will need to specify the horizontal sync and vertical refresh rates for your particular monitor. These values will be in the spec sheets that should have come with your monitor. (If you don't have these you might have to find out who made it and ask them ) For example it may list horizontal sync as 30 - 70 KHz and vertical refresh as 50 - 120 Hz or something like that. You then need to set these values in Xconfigurator during the custom monitor section. Hope this helps.....

Subject: [Newbie]Xwindows, monitor not supported?
I'm finally making the switch from Windows to Linux (red hat). I installed
from an older CD RedHat 6.0, Kernel v 2.2.5-15 which seems to have all gone
fine except the Xwindows configuration. I'm using a DigiView monitor that
is not on the Xconfigurator list of supported monitors. My SiS video card
is, and was chosen in the setup. The problem is that every single monitor
option I choose under Custom (have tried all of them including generic
monitor and video card) comes back with the "There is a problem" screen and
X does not display correctly. It starts, but the display is way out to
lunch. I'm able to back out of the server with the Alt, Ctrl, Backspace
sequence, but can't switch between video modes with the Alt, Ctrl, + key
sequence. I have chosen all available sync rates but still no luck. Does
anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Jim
