Ok, I gave up and got the RH 7.2 distro instead of compiling in the code for my graphics card's 3D chip set, and I must say I'm quite impressed. It turns out that while Xconfigurator says it supported my graphics card, support for the 3D chip that's on the card is not complied into the 2.2.5-15 kernel. I hope it's assumed that since this is a newbie list, I'm not yet to the point where I want to get into kernel compiling. I'm still but a floppy-swapper! For all I know, this distro is great. I'm a little humbled, though, at my pleasure in the "windoze" style install. I was thinking I would have to get into some "guru territory" to get this thing running, but it all fell together 1-2 -3. Hey, this is a great list! Thanks for everyone's time and effort.
