They get cruddy inside, no big deal. Just clean everything up real good and 
make that armature nice and clean where the brushes make contact. The hardest 
part is getting it all back together. You'll be fine.

Pulled the starter, it looks like a gear box in side.  Covered in
black grease and crude. The must be a bad or missing o ring near the
spline gear.   Its ammazing it ever worked with all the oil and crude
on/in it. Armature looks ok will check continuity once I get the crude
off it. I located a rebuild kit on line (http://www.motorcityreman.com/
4brrekit.html) for $30 will give it a try.
