I replaced my chain and sprockets last year at 23K miles. 14K doesn't sound like very good life from the OEM O-ring chain. Must've dried out the seals while it was "resting"over the years.
I kept the original sprocket sizes. 15 on the front and 38 on the back. It's the right combo for the local and highway riding that I do. Angela : Normal procedure is to change the chain and the sprockets as a unit. A worn sprocket can wear your new chain prematurely. The way you can tell if a sprocket is worn is to examine the teeth. The tops of the teeth should be flat and the slope on each side should be symetrical. A really worn sprocket tooth is shaped kinda like the sillouette of an ocean wave. Oddly enough, when I pulled my sprockets off at 23K miles they still looked almost new. When buying new sprockets, stick with good old steel. Lighter aluminum sprockets made for racing will wear out much quicker. I picked up a nice set of JT steel sprockets at Bike Bandit. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Nighthawk Motorcycle Lovers!" group.
