thanks Allen, I'll check all this out tomorrow, Graham

Graham, I think I found the right wiring diagram here:

So breaking this down into two different issues to make it easier
since it doesn't appear that both circuits are connected (almost).
Brakes:
The green is ground, brown is tail light power, and Green Yellow is
brake light. This should be pretty straight forward as both brake
switches get power straight from the fuse block off of the Green White
wire. The horn is also powered off of that same Green white wire and
the horn switch is a ground switch so does the horn work? Lastly the
power feed for the turn signal relay is guess what the same Green
white wire. I'm thinking that you have a short on the Green white
wire. I'd test it after the fuse, then at the horn, then the turn
signal relay, then at the front brake switch, then lastly at the rear
brake switch. if you have power from all of those points then I'm
stumped.
Flashers:
Well if you have power to the flasher relay on the Green White wire
then you should be getting power over the Green wire to the turn
signal switch in the left hand control. from there depending on if you
have it set to left or right you should be getting power to either the
blue (right) or the orange (left) wire. It does appear that the power
to the rear turn signals has to first go through a bulkhead plug on
each front turn signal so you might want to check how the front
signals are wired someone might have did a hack job when mounting
aftermarket signals. I tend to think that this is the issue because
when you activate the turn signal it should supply power to the
opposite running light and shut off power to the the side that is
supposed to flash. I think someone wired it backwards. so switch in
left position you should have power at the Front left signal on the
orange wire and not the orange white, and on the front right signal
you should have power on the blue white. with the switch in the right
position you should have power on the front right signal over the blue
wire and none on the blue white and on the left side you should have
power over the orange white.
Of course if I have the wrong wiring diagram all of this is a load
of bunk...

Moving from the Kawasaki 454LTD problem (hard to start) which
maybe the
starter motor, to a 1984 Honda Nighthawk CB650. I have an electrical
problem that has me as confused as a stunned mullet. Both front
running
lights work, the tail light works. However the rear turn signals
do not
work at all, neither does the brake light, when activated by
either the
brake lever or the brake pedal. Not only that but when I do
activate the
turn signals the opposite side running lights shut off. There is
no power
to the turn signal wires (orange and blue) at either the rear turn
signals
or at the connections in the headlight bucket. The ground is OK.
The fuses
are good and the roast in the oven smells real good, Graham
