Sometimes the ring is just stuck. The water may have come from the
atmosphere, slowly working through the intake path, condensing when it got
cold and never really evaporating.

An open valve on that cylinder is all it would take.

I would worry less about the no-compression, as stuck rings can unstick
themselves with a little time.

I don't know of an online version, but the paper copies of Clymer are
fairly cheap.
