Subject: Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 83 NightHawk Engine question

It did sit outside for 6 years and needs everything redone. It is air cooled.
Where did the water come from??? Strange. I am more worried about the
no-compression on #4. Not sure if I dropped a ring. I have never pulled a head.
I try to avoid engine work. I dont have the maual either yet.
Do you know if there is a Clymer or Haynes online somewhere?

I'm assuming you have the tank off already, so you may want to shine a light
down in #3 first to get a rough idea what awaits you, but oddly high
compression and milky coffee effluent tells me you probably have water damage
in there.

Sounds like you have build up in #3. Might be worth it to pull the head,
make sure you won't break things.

I just pulled the plugs and got the engine unstuck. Oil is running out
that hole as expected. I am looking into tapping out the old thread and putting
a new plug in there.

I have a lot of brown stuff shooting out at me from cylinder 3. I
dumped some oil into each cyl earlier today. It looks like a mixture of oil and
water. The oil coming from the hole is nice and black. I have good compression
on 1+2 (around 120) way too high on 3 (over 200) with the brown soup and no
compression (under 50) on 4.

I will plug the hole, drain and add oil and see what happens. I also
need to rebuild the carbs and everything else.

Just wanted to make sure that this hole should be plugged.

Wow, that's definitely some Previous Owner After Market Magic going
on there.

Thanks so much. I think I found the bolt on BikeBandit. It is the
open hole you see here.

Welcome to the group. You can send a picture just by attaching it
to the email. I'm not quite picturing what hose you're talking about unless
it's one of the lines to the oil cooler.

I work on bikes as a hobby and just picked up a 83 NightHawk
650.
On the right side, lower front of the engine is a metal hose
that broke off. Nothing is attached to the hose but a fitting. I assume this
would be for an after market Oil temp gauge.
In any event, the hole is now open with the fitting broken off
inside. Is there a way for me to cap that hole if I get the old threads out?
I can send a picture if needed. Not sure if I can just atatch
one. I just joined the group.
I am located in the Philly suburbs.
                Any help would be appreciated.
