A few things to add to Pat's list: MANUAL (~$35, I think?). Totally invaluable. Ring compressor yes, though finding one small enough for motorcycle cylinders might be a touch more expensive.
Pat, you were close: Vernier calipers. Silly french word. :D If the OP were close to my place, I have pretty much any tool he could want to tear down and rebuild the bike engine. It's a side effect of being a semi-recovered VW addict. :p However, I'm with Javier on this one.
