Assuming the mechanic is correct - and it isn't something simple such
as a valve adjustment (I'd think that was unlikely - but I'm not an
expert) it could be a lot of things. Head gaskets can cause that, but
I'd think considering the age of these bikes, piston ring replacement
is not out of the question. If the cylinder is scored, it could cause
this as well.
I'm afraid I can't help with the dollars and cents point
of view much, but I can tell you stripping an engine down and
rebuilding it is time consuming, if you do it or a mechanic does.
