I have an 86 gl 1200, and I don't think there's anything better suited for me on long runs. I am 6 foot 3 inches tall and almost 300 pounds. The bike is heavy (700 pounds) but low center of gravity. It can be a bugger to pick up, but with proper techniques it can be done even by a small person. The center stand is a bugger regardless of who you are and I only use it for maintenance.
I say go for the goldwing, they are virtually maintenance free and will go well beyond 100k miles if you just keep up on oil changes and tires.
