I finally gave in and cut it; not looking forward to working on the 
carburetor side.
My garage is not heated and things like rubber hoses are not very pliable 
in the cold (especially being as old as they are).  

The shut-off valve seems pretty gunky so will have to take that apart and 
clean with the kerosene/ATF mixture.
