Since you're going to LA, I imagined that you would go to the south rim and then go south to I-40. It's also possible to go to the north rim and then go through Las Vegas and down to LA. If you do that, you can also see the desert lake at Paige, AZ. Very nice. If you go to 4 corners, you will also be close to Mesa Verde, although that trip does take some time. Anyway, two years ago I went to the south rim and then went down and spent the night in Williams Arizona.
