I'm telling you Glenn - the all-purpose bike doesn't exist. The big
difference is the faster highway speeds that we expect / demand / are
required to hold these days. The 70s, 80s, 90s bikes are great at speeds up
to 55 MPH and in many cases 65 - beyond that - they get buzzy, are
uncomfortable etc.
The counter point - a bike that is very good on the highway, has the wind
protection, heavy enough not to get blown around, is generally too heavy to
be easily flicked around town.
I've made the compromise of going with a larger displacement V-twin
bike that has decent wind protection and not too heavy to muscle around the
driveway if I need to. But, around town, its fuel mileage is low and on the
high way at 70+ its revving higher than it should and really is not at its
optimal condition. But it will do it.
As they say - YMMV - your mileage may vary :-)
