dd-wrt should soar on the WRT54GL. I have used dd-wrt for years and 2.4 SP1 is fairly robust for me so far. the WRT54GL was specifically set out to be friendly to the 3rd party WRT firmwares (as opposed to the more common, off-the-shelf varieties).
