Great suggestions for troubleshooting. I will try out some of the easier
ones, when I get home.

As for suspecting the driver problem, Intel has been very good with
releasing open source version of their wireless drivers and as of kernel
2.6.24, the driver is embedded.  I use Slackware 12.1 (latest stable
release) which has kernel 2.6.24.5, so I think I am covered on that,
although I could be wrong.

Both vummiv networks are unsecured.  I wasn't aware that Vanderbilt
maintains unencrypted wireless network across the campus, I found it out
from ITS website this afternoon.
