that is weird.

one thing about seeing if NDIS Wrapper might work is that you would then
have some additional driver options (like the ones that came with the
windows side of the laptop and/or from intel's web site). if you have
never used NDIS wrapper, it is not as bad as it seems. with Slack10 you
should be able to get the core of it going without too much trouble (but I
am not a slacker so, please take that with a grain of salt). once that is
in place, ndiswrapper will let you install the windows driver. once
installed, it should startup and detect each time you start up ndiswrapper
and it detects the hardware. it has worked well for me in the past. where
WPA is involved, having some driver options might be very advantageous
(though this would not be in play with the Bongo deal). what about the two
vandy networks - were they WEP, WPA or in the clear?

one other thing you might try too is get the LiveCD of Fedora 9 (and/or 8
may be new enough) and boot it on the laptop. knoppix also has decent
built in wireless. Knoppix and fedora LiveCDs can support both WPA and
NDIS Wrapper (but you might have to 'apt-get install' on knoppix or 'yum
install' on the fedora - once booted of course). the LiveCD approach may
give you yet another way to toubleshoot and/or, if the LiveCDs work fine,
an alternate config to try out on Slack10.

anyways, good luck!
