I make a bucket that needs an entry on my tax return. If expenses don't go on a tax return, I use the least number of buckets to keep track of where I spend money.
Over the years, I also used to break out income and expenses into minute detail believing I was being smart and good. Now that I'm older, I realize I was wasting my time for info that I didn't need, didn't use, and actually didn't really care about anyway.
