hi tim,
this looks really beatiful! congratulations! I think it is much more
than what people usually do as their bachelor thesis work.
"Now, after more than 2.5 years of development and almost one year of a
graphical user interface, nobody tried to use nova, despite a talk on
the Linux Audio Conference 2007 in Berlin. Some people offered their help
in the development, but unfortunately nobody found the time to really
contribute to the source code. I am not completely sure, what is the
reason for that, but my guess is that most people, who are competent
software developers are busy with other pro jects and thus do not find
the time to contribute to other pro jects than their own."
that is somewhat sad to read. but I think there are many reasons for it.
first, it only runs on linux. if you want people to use it, you have to
provide win and mac binaries. or at least support compiling, which did
not work for me (I have sndlib and portaudio lib, but I keep getting
error messages that they are not found...)
second you would have to provide better documentation, including a
webpage, people complain about this in in pd, and pd has already a lot
of documentation.
and then, I think you need to find people that use it for their work.
that could be students (for example, when you teach at a university) or
corporate clients (that use it for some installation).
if you want to address artists, then you can't expect them to be coding
specialists, you need to provide them with a framework that they can
use. I saw a lot of artists interested in coding, but they need tools
like processing (java) or openframeworks (c++), where they can
concentrate on the main parts, have wrappers for more complicated
underlying code. then they will be able to even create source code.
similar to this is the question of compatibilty. have you thought about
compatibility to pd and max? would it be possible to load pd-patches?
also, have you looked at the new file format for max5 patches? would it
be possible to get a tool like flext, that creates a nova and pd
external from one codebase?
In the US with the current state of your technology you would now try to
get a nice sum of investment money (like 1-10 mio dollars) and make it a
proprietory new software product. From what I read in your paper, you
have probably the fastest dsp kernel for realtime audio available.
Interested people might sit in the gaming industry (sony, EA) or in the
research labs of (future) mobile devices (nokia, apple, ...).
try to publish (an adopted version of) your paper in a scholarly journal
like the computer music journal.
marius.
