i am not familiar with fink ... are the fink libraries/headers in the
search path? (PATH environment variable)

i doubt ... the last time i compiled pd, it shipped its own version of
portaudio v18 and linked statically ... that might have changed, i
haven't compiled pd for a long time ...

instead of running `./configure --my-fancy-argument=foo && make target`,
you can run `scons my-fancy-argument=foo target' ... you lose some
performance, but you gain proper dependency checking, which is basically
broken with make ...
scons is easier to learn and more robust than the autotools, spend 2
hours learning scons, save 2 days of headache with autotools ;)

ah, they switched to json ... finally a proper markup language :) 
i am using an xml-based file format ... json or yaml have the advantage
of being human-readable ...
they seem to use object identifiers like "obj-X", where i am using
uuids, however it is quite odd, that objects save their number of inlets
and outlets ...
