Hi all, let me chime in here:
2008/5/3 marius schebella <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:> "Now, after more than 2.5 years of development and almost one year of a > graphical user interface, nobody tried to use nova, despite a talk on the
> Linux Audio Conference 2007 in Berlin.I was always very much interested in the nova development, and i still am. However, there are a few points that might be worth mentioning that kept me from participating more than i did
1) Ease of access: One has to put a lot of time into getting the system to work, because of the amount of dependencies and because of restrictions of compiler etc. versions. It is sure great from a developer's standpoint to use the newest c++ etc. features but it is not at all from a user's standpoint. This is one of the points where conservatism of development is a good thing. Another point is the usage of the git repository. I have been participating more when nova used the svn system, because it was installed on my system. I have git installed in the meantime, but i have no time and motivation how to deal with it, also given that nova is the only project that makes use of it (of the ones i use)
2) Compatibility: I'm sure that there are compelling reasons to drop compatility to existing systems from a developer's viewpoint, but since i'm not sure that nova can do all or most of the things that i need for my work, i can't really afford to put time into it. I would have to start from scratch with all of the framework (externals, abstraction) that i have become used to.
187% cpu efficiency might be impressive, but for me personally is not enough to outweigh the amount of work to switch systems, given the above points - i have no reason to believe that using nova i could make "better" art than using pd or max/msp. The actually sad thing for me is that Miller's conservative viewpoint is the one extreme, while Tim's is the other one - from a user's (even lead user's) perspective one in the middle would probably be more feasible.
all the best, gr~~~ Thomas Grill http://grrrr.org
